When you decide to move away from mulch and toward a permanent rock solution, the next big question is: Which stone do I pick? In Western Wisconsin, two of the most popular choices are River Rock and Trap Rock (or crushed granite). While they both look great, they perform very differently. Here is what you need to know before we pull the truck into your driveway.
1. River Rock: The “Resort” Look
River rock is known for its smooth, rounded edges and natural color variations (tans, greys, and blues).
- Best For: Decorative flower beds, dry creek beds, and poolside landscaping.
- The Pro: It’s easy to walk on and gives your home a soft, high-end feel.
- The Con: Because it’s round, it “rolls.” It’s not the best choice for steep hills because it can slide over time.
2. Trap Rock: The “Solid” Solution
Trap rock is a crushed, angular stone—usually in a darker grey or “black” tone. Because the edges are sharp and jagged, the stones “lock” together once they are spread.
- Best For: Steep slopes, areas with heavy foot traffic, and modern industrial-style homes.
- The Pro: It stays exactly where we put it. It’s the ultimate “erosion fighter.”
- The Con: It’s not barefoot-friendly. If you have kids or pets running through the beds, this might be a bit sharp for them.
Which one should you choose?
Most of our Chippewa Valley projects actually use a mix of both! We might use Trap Rock for a drainage-heavy side yard and River Rock for the beautiful front entry.
