Installing a pool or hot tub is a massive investment. The last thing you want is to spend your entire summer skimming leaves out of the water or watching your expensive plants die from chlorine splash-back.
In the Chippewa Valley, we need plants that are hardy enough for Zone 4 winters, salt/chlorine tolerant, and—most importantly—low-mess.
1. The “No-Mess” Privacy Screen: Techny Arborvitae
If you need a green wall for privacy, the Techny Arborvitae is a local favorite. Unlike some evergreens that shed needles constantly, these are relatively clean and provide a dense, year-round screen.
- Why it works: It handles the Wisconsin freeze-thaw cycle better than most and creates a windbreak for those using the pool on breezy evenings.
2. Salt & Splash Tolerant: Ornamental Grasses
If you have a saltwater pool or kids who love to cannonball, you need plants that don’t mind getting wet. Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass or Little Bluestem are incredibly resilient.
- Why it works: They offer beautiful movement in the wind, require almost zero maintenance, and don’t drop petals or seeds into your filtration system.
3. Pop of Color (Without the Cleanup): Daylilies
Daylilies are nearly indestructible. They can handle the heat reflecting off a concrete pool deck and aren’t bothered by occasional splashes.
- Why it works: They provide vibrant color all summer long. Just be sure to choose a “reblooming” variety like Stella de Oro for maximum impact.
4. Groundcover Instead of Mulch: Sedum
Wood mulch near a pool is a recipe for a clogged vacuum. Instead, consider using Stonecrop (Sedum) or decorative river rock.
- Why it works: Sedum is a succulent-style groundcover that stores water in its leaves, making it perfect for those hot, sunny spots right next to the water.
